The peninsula of Kamchatka, due to the influence of the cold Pacific,
has the longest ski-touring season in Russia, especially at the south
region, where slopes of volcanoes are completely covered with snow even in
May-June, somewhere till the mid-July. Strong elevation gain, long slopes,
absence of crevassed glaciers, different snow conditions are the feature
of volcanoes situated here. Around Petropavlovsk, the capital of the
region, there exist 2 different groups of volcanoes: 1st is northwards,
really it’s the chain of 5 volcanoes, with the active Avachinsky (2741)
and the highest Koryaksky (3456) in the middle. The 2nd group is on the
south, at the up streams of the Paratunka river, and includes
Vilyuchinsky (2173), Mutnovsky (2323) ,and Gorely (1828) volcanoes. The
snow on the slopes of the 1st group is nearly always pressed, the smooth
snow is often available at the region of Vilyuchinsky. The season is
March-April-May-June,15. The average day’s temperature in May is higher
than 0, but strong wind is possible.
