Arhyz is the westernmost tip of the Caucasus glaciation. Moderate altitude of
the mountains, lower line of the glaciers and easier access of the passes
provides to penetrate inside the real great mountains without any special
acclimatization. In plus a first days trek here gives you good chance to get a
fit for the whole trip. The mountains are very concentrated: just some steps
from the forest and you arrive to a glacier or to its outlier, which is now a
nice lake.
During the trek to Dombay you visit old valleys with lifes of ancient times.
Local shepherds lives the same huts as a thouthand years and any means of
transportation is with their horses. There is no almost a trekker along the
ways, so they would like to communicate a bit to know the news and would be
happy if you will degustate their Cheese or Airan (fermented milk). At Mukhu
valley our friend shepherds do a dramatic performance to prepare Shashlyk –
barbecue!
